Basic Information:

The Team
It is a motley crew of techies, OD Consultants, senior executives, homemakers, entrepreneurs, civil society organization leaders, drama teachers and professional actors. This group, separately or together, stages at least one production a year. Last year was the first time this group staged a ticketed production. However, members and patrons of the group have different credentials in theatre. Here are the profiles of one of them. Our guide and coach is Swaroopa Ghosh. She is a well-established cinema actor (Vicky Donor, Piku and Pink being some of the films where she played prominent roles). Swaroopa is a professional actress who made her mark from group theatre in Kolkata before venturing to Delhi and working with Faisal Alkazi. She has a nearly 30 year career in acting. Swaroopa has been a Drama teacher at the British School in Delhi as well. She has run workshops for this particular production and directed the choreography. She is also mentor for the Director, Sanjeev Roy.

Description:

The Play

'The Good Doctor', a series of playlets, written by Neil Simon, is an all-time favorite. In this production, we are staging 3 playlets from the entire lot but with a twist. While sticking to the overall structure and narrative, we have adapted them to today's India. The 'transcreation' in Bangla, has been done by the best translator of Bangla literature - Arunava Sinha. He has made Bangla literature (novels, essays, poetry) accessible to the audience who could not access it because they did not know Bangla. His translations include the works of Shankar, Sunil Gangopadhay, Samaresh Majumdar, Shakti Chattopadhyay, Nabonita Dev amongst others. In these plays the playwright has looked at the lives of ordinary people (through a selection of Anton Chekov's short stories). One of the themes is how 'class' is a naturally woven part of our society. Each playlet looks at a different scenario, often minor, and how class ultimately determines our responses. It is not moralistic, merely a commentary. Into this narrative, Arunava has injected today's milieu. These are completely original and hilarious takes on the politics of the right, left and centre -Arunava spares none.
